M K Shipping & Chartering Co is one of the oldest Steamer Agents at Kolkata & Haldia. It commenced it's activities at Kolkata Port in 1892. This company have been active in this Port for more than a century. The founder of this firm was Hajee Mahboob Kassim, who was a shipping Expert. He was the first Indian to be made fellow of the institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, London, Fellow of Royal Institute of Arbitrators, London; Commissioner for Port of Calcutta; Member secretary, Transport, Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI); founder of the Haldia Anchorage Subsidiary port scheme, reprensative of major maritime companies in worldwide arbitration; and Lecturer on Shipping Law and Practice at Narottam Morarjee Institute of Shipping for many years.He was the sole shipping Arbitrator recognized by Govt. of India. He was also one of the originators of Haldia Dock Complex. On his project approved by the World Bank, Haldia Port came into picture. He was an elected member Commissioner (Trustee) for Kolkata Port for two terms. He was considered an authority in Chartering & Charter Parties.

Early years, M K Shipping And Chartering was the Agents of Polish Ocean Lines of Gdynia from 1957 to 1961 for Kolkata and for Pacific International Pte. Ltd, Singapore from its inception upto 1981.
M K Shipping And Chartering Co was also Charterer's Agents to Minerals & Metals Trading Corporation of India Ltd, State Trading Corporation of India Ltd, India Sugar & General Industries, Export Import Corporation LTD, etc as well as Phillip brother of Hongkong, London & U. S.A.
This compares have also acted as Owners & Charterer as Agents for Tankers at Haldia & Kolkata & also Charterer's Agents for Steel Authority of India Ltd.
Few of our present working Team was trained by Hajee Mahboob Kassim. Mr. Kassim passed away on 9th December 2000. Then on September 2001 Mr. Sk. Majaffar has taken over the firm.
